Great portraits focus on the eyes. Even if your subject is not looking at the camera try to focus on the iris.

Whether shooting with a smart phone or DSLR, manually select an AF (auto focus) point that’s positioned over one of your subject’s eyes. If you’re not keen about the composition try a focus lock and recompose.

how to take professional pictures of people and babiesFocus lock and recompose: Frame up your subject in good light. Position the central focus point over an eye, then press down the shutter button half way (this causes the camera focus to lock and will stay at that focus point until released). Recompose (reposition the camera) while keeping the shutter half way down. Once all is framed to your liking, press the shutter down all the way to complete the shot.

View the image you just captured by looking at it on the LCD. Zoom-in on the eyes to ensure that you grabbed tack-sharp focus.
